Holzschnitte, unterschiedliche Motive, Tusche, in der Broschüre
Die Gletscher der letzten Eiszeit zogen sich in Europa vor rund 12.000 Jahren zurück. Sie hinterließen eine komplett neu gestaltete Landschaft, in der sich im weiteren Verlauf eine Vielzahl von Seen und Mooren entwickelte. Die Unberechenbarkeit jener Moore und Sümpfe machte sie für den Menschen unzugänglich, wodurch dieser Naturraum mystisch und rätselhaft aufgeladen wurde. Noch heute ziehen uns Geschichten von Irrlichtern und Elfen in den Bann.
In den letzten dreihundert Jahren wurden die Moore in Deutschland systematisch
aus verschiedenen Gründen bewusst entwässert. Während Wasservögel und Großgehölze in diesen Feuchtgebieten Beachtung finden, werden kleine Moorpflanzen oft vergessen, obwohl sie für das komplexe Ökosystem eine entscheidende Rolle spielen, insbesondere als Kohlenstoffspeicher. Aus diesem Grund werden noch intakte und renaturierte Moore für den Klimaschutz immer bedeutsamer.
Zhou’s Arbeit konzentriert sich auf das filigrane Leben, das in den Nischen dieser Ökosysteme gedeiht. In Zusammenarbeit mit Kindern entwickelt er in einem Workshop Holzschnitte, deren Abdrücke hier in der Broschüre als originaler Kunstdruck erscheinen und mitgenommen werden können. Für die Erarbeitung der Holzschnitte im Workshop werden durch die Stürme der letzten Wochen abgebrochene Äste aus Berlin verwendet.

The glaciers of the last ice age in Europe retreated about 12,000 years ago. They left behind a completely reshaped landscape, in which a multitude of lakes and bogs developed in the further course. The unpredictability of those moors and swamps made them inaccessible to humans, giving this natural area a mystical and mysterious charge.
Even today, stories of will-o’- the-wisps and elves cast a spell over us. Over the last three hundred years, the moors in Germany have been systematically and deliberately drained for various reasons. While waterfowl and large woody plants in these wetlands receive attention, small bog plants are often forgotten, even though they play a crucial role in the complex bog ecosystem, especially as carbon reservoirs. For this reason, still
intact and renaturalized peatlands are becoming increasingly important for climate change mitigation.
Zhou’s work focuses on the delicate life that thrives in the niches of these ecosystems. In collaboration with children, he develops woodblock prints in a workshop, the prints of which appear here in the brochure as an original art print and can be taken home. For the development of the woodcuts during the workshop, branches broken off by the storms in Berlin of the last weeks are used.
